With the Illusion kit, you will learn the new skill of bending your own crank wire. You should build the Gryphon or Bluebird before you attempt this more challenging model.
You can customize your Illusion by decorating it with permanent markers or graphics from your inkjet printer (requires additional tissue).
You can print your own custom wing graphics for your ornithopter kit using an inkjet printer! It's easy to do:
- Tape the tissue onto a sheet of regular paper. You may need to tape all four edges, or just the leading edge, depending on your printer.
- Print your graphics on the tissue.
- Cut out the printed design.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to use the 20 by 6 inch tissue supplied with the ornithopter kit. You will need three sheets of tissue, each measuring 7.5 by 10 inches. You can buy tissue at a craft store and cut it to size. Use one for each wing and one for the tail.
You can design your own graphics for the ornithopter kit or use the free graphics provided here. The file contains six different wing designs and matching tails for your ornithopter. Print only the pages you want. Use the "mirror image" feature in your printer settings to print left and right wings. You might need Adobe Reader to open the ornithopter wing graphics file.
